Sturgeon Moon finishes strong to win Audubon Oaks

Instagrand got his latest stakes winner in style Sunday at Ellis Park when Sturgeon Moon powered through the stretch to win the $200,000 Audubon Oaks by three lengths.

Third in the Indiana Oaks (G3) last month, Sturgeon Moon is the fourth stakes winner this year for top-10 Second-Crop sire Instagrand.

With red-hot jockey Tyler Gaffalione in the irons, Sturgeon Moon was mid-pack through the first half of the seven-furlong sprint. She moved closer to the leaders on the turn, then when in the clear in upper stretch, showed an impressive turn of foot, powering past Princess Proud inside the final sixteenth and drawing away to win handily in 1:23.08 on a fast track.

“She took me there every step of the way. The cutback in distance (her last three starts were at 1 1/16-miles) was no problem either, she’s a nice filly,” said Tyler Gaffalione in the winner’s circle interview.

Sturgeon Moon is now 3-1-1 in six starts and has earned $253,005 for OXO Equine LLC. The bay filly was bred in Kentucky by Phalaris, LLC.
