Not This Time will attempt to register his first Kentucky Derby (G1) winner as a sire Saturday at Churchill Downs with the swift Six Speed, who will break from post 17 in the 20-horse field.
Epicenter, who would go on to be Not This Time’s 3-year-old champion colt of 2022, was a heart-breaking second in that year’s Derby.
Six Speed has lived up to his name thus far, racing almost exclusively on the front end in all five of his starts. He has had considerable success over the winter/spring in Dubai, winning both the UAE 2000 Guineas (G3) and Guineas Trial S. and finishing second to Derby entrant Wonder Dean in the UAE Derby (G2).
Six Speed, trained by Bhupat Seemar, worked four furlongs in :48 4/5 at Churchill Downs on April 27.
“We’re not going to change too much in the Derby,” Seemar said after the workout. “He’s a horse that likes to be up there. If they go fast, he’ll go faster. On the other hand, this horse has a deep pedigree. He has that Phipps family pedigree where there’s a lot of stamina in it. We’ll find out – if you don’t do it, you’ll never know.”
Six Speed is owned by the partnership of Brunetti Dugan Stables (John Brunetti and Joseph Dugan), Black Type Thoroughbreds (Jake Ballis), Steve Adkisson and Swinbank Stables (Reagan Swinbank). The dark bay colt was bred by KatieRich Farms in Kentucky.
2024 Derby-winning jockey Brian Hernandez, Jr. will be aboard Six Speed on Saturday.
The Derby will be run at 6:57 pm ET, and can be seen on the NBC family of networks.
