Not This Time’s brilliant colt Magnitude secured his spot as the top older horse in training in North America with his front-running victory in Saturday’s $2 million Stephen Foster S. (G1) at Churchill Downs.
Magnitude crossed the wire 1 ¼-lengths in front of Baeza, while last year’s Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Sovereignty was third and White Abbario in fourth.
Magnitude, who had not raced since winning the Dubai World Cup (G1) in late March, went right to the front on Saturday, establishing a clear lead going into the first turn. He had 1 ½-lengths on longshot Willy D’s at the half-way point before both White Abbario and Sovereignty made their bids midway through the final turn.
That duo got within a length of the lead turning for home, but Magnitude still had plenty to give and burst clear to open a three-length lead with a furlong to run. Baeza, who broke very slowly, closed late, but was no threat to Magnitude, who stopped the timer in an excellent 1:48.03 over a sloppy racetrack.
“I’m so incredibly proud of this horse and everyone who has been a part of his journey,” trainer Steve Asmussen said. “He continues to give us everything he has every time he runs. You couldn’t ask for more from a horse like him.
“What a perfect story for all of us. A horse who came through the program, reaching the heights that he has with him beating Forever Young last time and the field that he beat today … what a special day, what a special moment.”
Owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC and bred by Ron Stolich, Magnitude is now 8-2-1 in 14 starts and has earned $9,782,365.
Magnitude topped an incredible day for Not This Time, who also had the 1-2-3 finishers in the $250,000 Texas Turf Classic S. at Lone Star Park. Not This Time currently sits atop the 2026 General Sire list with over $18.6 million in progeny earnings, more than $2.5 million ahead of Into Mischief. The Taylor Made stallion also leads the list by stakes winners and graded stakes winners.
