Ewing sparkles in G2 Saratoga Special

Ewing gives Knicks Go his first graded stakes winner in the historic Saratoga Special (G2) - Angelo Lieto

Knicks Go’s Ewing remained undefeated with a stellar performance in the $200,000 Saratoga Special S. (G2) at Saratoga on Saturday, Aug. 2, becoming the first graded stakes winner for his freshman sire.

Ridden by Jose Ortiz, Ewing broke a step slow from the rail in the 6 ½-furlong event but quickly hit his best stride and darted to the front of the field inside of Obliteration. Ewing showed the way down the backstretch, opened a clear advantage on Obliteration at the head of the lane, and held sway to the wire to score by a length in impressive front-running fashion.

“I felt I broke a step slow and my horse took the lead by himself, so I was happy with that,” said Ortiz. “From the three-eighths pole to the wire I knew it was a match race, so I let my horse go. I didn’t wait for him.”

A $585,000 purchase at the OBS Spring Sale, Ewing is owned by D J Stables, West Point Thoroughbreds, and Kenneth Freirich, and is trained by Mark Casse. Ewing was a 12-length winner of a Saratoga maiden special weight on July 5 and was named a TDN Rising Star for the head-turning debut. The gray or roan colt, who was bred in Kentucky by John Gardiner, is out of the Indian Charlie mare Sassy Ali Joy. Ewing is now perfect in two career starts.

“That was kind of crazy,” said winning trainer Mark Casse. “We didn’t warm him up so he would kind of get away slow; so he could settle. Jose said he settled for three strides. He’s fast.”
