Not This Time’s 2025 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) champ Cy Fair found the winner’s circle on “Thurby” at Churchill Downs in the Mamzelle S. (G3) for 3-year-old fillies.
In the 5 ½-furlong Mamzelle, Cy Fair had a rematch with Slay the Day, who had bested her by three-quarters of a length in the Limestone S. (G3) just 20 days ago at Keeneland.
Cy Fair proved the best on Thursday with a stalking trip under Irad Ortiz, Jr. The bay filly tracked in fifth just behind Slay the Day, until she turned for home. Switched to the outside, Cy Fair mounted her challenge and collared Slay the Day with a furlong to go. She went on to forge clear in deep stretch, winning by 1 ¼-lengths in 1:01.90 on the firm turf.
“(Trainer) George (Weaver) said ‘Don’t be on the lead.’ Last time (in the Limestone at Keeneland) I went to the front and we got beat.” Ortiz said. “This time I took a hold on her out of the gate. She was pulling hard but I had her. Then I cut her loose and she went just like she was supposed to.”
Owned by Medallion Racing, Swinbank Stables LLC, Joey Platts and Mark Stanton, Cy Fair is 4-1-1 in six starts and has earned $892,255.
“That is kind of what we hope she would do, settle a little bit better,” Phillip Shelton of Medallion Racing said. “Once she turned in the lane and switched leads, it was kind of all over. She’s a special horse, and all credit goes to George and his team, and they made the decision to run her back here.”
Cy Fair was bred in Kentucky by Marc Keller and sold to her owners for $185,000 at the 2025 OBS Spring 2-year-olds sale. The filly is the eighth graded stakes winner this year for the nation’s top-ranked General sire.
