Coppelia impressive winner of the Dream Supreme Stakes

Coppelia took command of the $300,000 Dream Supreme Stakes at Churchill Downs around the far turn and powered home late to become the newest stakes winner for Not This Time on Sunday Nov. 13.

In the compact but competitive field of six, Coppelia broke alertly in the six-furlong event and sat just off the early pace set by Palm Cottage down the backstretch. She ranged up alongside the early leader turning for home, kicked clear in the lane, and held sway to score by 2 ¾ lengths in the end, stopping the clock in 1:09.90 under Martin Garcia.

Owned by Richard Rigney’s Rigney Racing, Coppelia was bred in Kentucky by Gabriel Duignan and Crosshaven Bloodstock and she is trained by Philip Bauer. Produced from the Mineshaft mare Crespano, Coppelia was a $250,000 graduate of the 2019 Keeneland September Sale.

“We wanted to see how she could handle things against the big girls, and she proved she belongs right with them,” Bauer said. “This is huge for this filly being only three years old and being black type. She’s always trained well and has really put things together recently.”

The $183,450 winner’s share of the purse improved Coppelia’s career earnings to $390,201 and her record now stands at 14-4-2-0. Prior to her win in the Dream Supreme, Coppelia was a convincing four-length winner of a second-level allowance race at Keeneland on Oct. 26.

Not This Time tops all Third-Crop Sires by a wide margin with progeny earnings of more than $11.7 million. He is the sire of a crop-best 14 black-type winners, 27 black-type horses, six graded stakes winners, and two Grade 1 winners. Not This Time will stand the 2023 breeding season for $135,000 S&N.
