Conceit wins tough battle to take $200,000 Audubon Oaks

Conceit out-fought A Fine Chardonnay in Sunday’s $200,000 Audubon Oaks to give the 3-year-old Not This Time filly her first stakes win.

Not This Time, the nation’s leading sire, now has 20 stakes winners, as well as 39 stakes horses overall, this year. His $21.55 million in progeny earnings lead the General Sire list by over $1 million.

Conceit was making her stakes debut in the seven-furlong affair. Twirling Aces was the early leader, with Conceit tracking closely in second. Just before turning for home, Conceit and A Fine Chardonnay both made bids for the lead. That battle intensified in the final furlong and Conceit outlasted her foe to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:21.80 on a fast track.

“She handles everything,” said winning jockey Florent Geroux said. “Today was the first time she was entered to run on dirt. Her previous dirt starts came in races taken off the turf. She’s a younger sister to Final Gambit, who can run on any surface, so it looks like a very good family for Juddmonte.”

Juddmonte is the owner/breeder of the filly. In her prior two dirt starts, she won both by 10 lengths. Conceit’s overall record is now 3-1-1 in six outings, with earnings of $249,883.
