Imaginationthelady’s stakes record performance in Friday’s Edgewood S. (G2) at Churchill Downs gave the nation’s leading sire Not This Time his second graded stakes winner on the card, coming about two hours after On Time Girl won the Eight Belles S. (G2).
Imaginationthelady, in post 3, made her way to the inside rail as she passed under the wire the first time, with a quartet of horses coming over from the outside to contest the lead. Tam Tam led the field through fractions of :23.17 and :47.78 with Lion Lake (IRE) pressing just to her outside, with Imaginationthelady sitting in seventh for the first six furlongs. Hugging the rail around the final bend, she began to close in on the pacesetters and was third after turning for home.
Inside the final sixteenth, there were four fillies across the track, with Lion Lake holding a narrow edge over Tam Tam. Imaginationthelady came driving between runners to get the win by a neck over Tam Tam in 1:40.92 for the 1 1/16-miles on a firm turf course.
“I didn’t have any instructions for my rider (Tyler Gaffalione),” said winning trainer Brendan Walsh. “He rides for me all the time and he knows what we want. This is a tribute to my whole team. They all work hard and this is the sort of thing that everyone enjoys. I’m not sure what’s next for her, but I’ve got a feeling she’s just going to get better.
“It was tight at the end. Tyler rode a great race. She was a little farther back than planned, but it worked out. We always thought she was a nice filly as a 2-year-old, and she’s only gotten better with age. I think her best races are still ahead of her.”
Owned by Mark Dobbin, Imagination the lady is 3-1-0 in five starts and has earned $830,270. Her first stakes win came last year in Keeneland’s Jessamine S. (G2). Three-year-old Imaginationthelady was bred in Kentucky by Ashview Farm & Colts Neck Stables.
