Silent Tactic brings solid credentials into Derby 152

Silent Tactic breezes on April 23 at Churchill Downs - Renee Torbit

Silent Tactic, the lifetime leading earner for Tacitus, drew post 13 for Saturday’s $5 million Kentucky Derby (G1) at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Mark Casse for John Oxley, Silent Tactic spent the winter/spring meet at Oaklawn Park, where he never finished worse than second in four stakes outings. He won the Southwest S. (G3) from far off the pace, was second by just a nose in the Rebel S. (G2), second to Derby favorite Renegade in the Arkansas Derby (G1), and finally second in the Smarty Jones S. in early January, which was the colt’s first start on dirt.

All told, Silent Tactic is 2-4-0 in six starts and has earned $1,051,922, making him one of only four millionaires in Saturday’s 20-horse field.

Silent Tactic’s latest breeze came April 23 at Churchill, when he covered four furlongs in :48 flat.

“He got over the track really well and when he came back, he wasn’t even blowing,” Casse said of Silent Tactic’s first Churchill Downs work.

Silent Tactic, who sold for $500,000 at the 2025 OBS Spring 2-year-old sale, was bred in Kentucky by the Don Alberto Corporation.

Silent Tactic will be ridden Saturday by Christian Torres, who rode the bay colt in all of his Oaklawn races.

The Derby will be run at 6:57 pm ET and can be seen on the NBC family of networks.
