Arthur’s Ride dominates top-class field in Whitney S. (G1)

Arthur's Ride (11) ridden by Junior Alvarado wins the Whitney Stakes (Grade 1) at the Saratoga Race Course on Whitney Stakes Day in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on August 3, 2024 Gary Johnson/Eclipse Sportswire/CSM

Arthur’s Ride won the historic Whitney S. (G1) on Aug. 3 in front-running style, leading at every
point of call to win by 2 ¼-lengths over a star-studded field.
Arthur’s Ride was making his first stakes appearance in the Whitney, following a 12 ¾-length
allowance score, when he earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 111, on June 7 at Saratoga as well.
Breaking from post nine in the field of 10, Arthur’s Ride got to the front soon after the break
and led Skippylongstocking by 1 ½-lengths, with multiple Grade 1 winner National Treasure in
third after a half-mile in :46.63. Skippylongstocking made his bid for the lead around the turn,
but Arthur’s Ride easily shook him off and opened up by four lengths with a furlong to go. With
the win securely in hand, he coasted home as Crupi and Post Time picked up the minor awards.
The final time of 1:48.54 earned the gray colt another stellar Beyer of 110.
"We felt if we can get him back as a 3- or 4-year-old, he will get better. He was a big, tall, rangy
horse who had every license to get better and we were right about that," said winning trainer
Bill Mott. "This is very satisfying.”
Arthur’s Ride, owned by Glassman Racing, improved his record to 4-2-0 from seven starts.
Bred by Helen Barbazon, Joseph Barbazon, and Tapit Syndicate, Arthur's Ride is a half-brother
to grade 1 winner Victory to Victory.
