Kay Cup stepped up into stakes company for the first time Wednesday at Saratoga and came away with a sharp three-length win in the $200,000 Bouwerie S.
The 3-year-old Instagrand filly came into the Bouwerie off a 4 ¼-length maiden win in late April and was the favorite seven-furlong Bouwerie. She got away in third and was just off the pace set by Bernieandtherose. Kay Cup came three-wide on the turn and was on even terms with the pacesetter turning for home. Kay Cup took command in midstretch and drew off rom there to finish in 1:23.79 on a fast track.
“I had a beautiful trip,” said winning rider Irad Ortiz Jr. “We broke good. She put me in a beautiful position. I sat and I tried to relax. She did. Then, when I went after her, she was responding really good. She got the job done. She is acting very, very nice.”
Owned by NY Final Furlong Racing Stable, Electric City Racing and Sportsmen Stable, Kay Cup is 2-0-1 in three starts and has earned $161,500. The dark bay filly was bred by Caperlane Farm.
Instagrand, a top-10 Second-Crop sire of 2025, has four stakes horses this year, including recent stakes winner Superwolf. A striking son of Into Mischief, Instagrand stands for $10,000 S&N.
