California Chrome tops Eclipse Award finalists

California Chrome, the 2014 Horse of the Year and 3-year-old Champion male, is once again up for a pair of Eclipse Award honors for his stellar 2016 campaign.

California Chrome is a repeat finalist in the Horse of the Year category, as well as the Older Male category. Should he win Horse of the Year, he would become only the second horse, along with the immortal John Henry, to win the award twice in non-consecutive years.

Arguably having the best year of his career in 2016, California Chrome won seven of eight starts and banked $8,180,000. He began the season with a win in the San Pasqual S. (G2), the shipped to Dubai for two wins, including in the Dubai World Cup (G1).

Back in the United States, he collected graded wins in the Awesome Again S. (G1), Pacific Classic (G1), and San Diego H. (G2), as well as a very game second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).

California Chrome wrapped up the year with a track-record performance in the Winter Challenge S., his final tune-up for the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) Jan. 28, which will likely be his final start prior to retiring for stud duty at Taylor Made Farm.

Winners for all categories will be revealed at the 46th annual Eclipse Awards, to be held at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, Jan. 21
