Conformation & Mating Recommendations
for UNBRIDLED'S SONG
Unbridled’s Song is a horse that exudes class and quality. A towering specimen, standing 17 hands, his size, scope and mass contribute to his awesome profile.
A decent headed horse, Unbridled’s Song has a very long neck that ties into a deep, somewhat upright shoulder. He has a lengthy back, but it is proportional to the length of his neck and forearm. He has a great angle of hip and his hocks are well set even if a fraction close. He has tremendous bone and is a very correct horse with short cannons and a very good foot. He may be a fraction upright, but in proportion with his shoulder.
Unbridled’s Song consistently stamps his foals, imparting his tremendous balance and profile. Consideration needs to be made for mares who have upright pasterns. Unbridled’s Song has been best served by breeding strong-bodied mares which have at least average length and size.
Like most of the Fappiano tribe, UNBRIDLED’S SONG has demonstrated an affinity for mares carrying In Reality (which gives a double of the influential sire, Rough’n Tumble). From In Reality line mares, he has sired grade one winners, Splendid Blended (dam by Valid Appeal) and Unbridled Elaine; graded stakes winner Griffinite (dam by In Reality); graded stakes winner Honest Man (out of a mare by Known Fact); stakes winner Ambition Unbridled (dam of a son of Relaunch). His grade one winner, Political Force, is out of a mare, inbred to In Reality, once through a sister to Relaunch. Mares by Tiznow, a son of Relaunch, might be particularly interesting, as this gives inbreeding to UNBRIDLED’S SONG’S female line.
UNBRIDLED’S SONG is firmly established as an outstanding cross for mares by Storm Cat, this cross producing grade one winners Magnificent Song and Buddha, and graded scorers Half Ours and Noonmark. This also suggest trying mares by sons by Storm Cat. The Storm Bird/Secretariat cross that produced Storm Cat is also found in the dam of grade one winner Thorn Song, which indicates that mares by the similarly-bred Summer Squall could also be considered.
Storm Cat is a grandson of Northern Dancer, and UNBRIDLED’S SONG has already met with success when crossed with several other branches of the Northern Dancer line, most notably Deputy Minister, Danzig, Nijinsky II (who would be interesting through Storm Cat’s close relative, Royal Academy) and Dixieland Band.
Dr. Carter is by Caro-UNBRIDLED’S SONG own broodmare sire-out of a half-sister to In Reality. He is the broodmare sire of two UNBRIDLED’S SONG stakes winners, including the standout filly Octave, and doubling Caro through other sources such as With Approval (broodmare sire of a graded stakes winner by a son of UNBRIDLED’S SONG and Cozzene might prove worthwhile.
The cross of UNBRIDLED’S SONG with mares descending from Blushing Groom, through Mt. Livermore (and his son, Housebuster) and Rahy has resulted in three stakes winners including graded victors Seducer’s Song and Even the Score.
A great-grandson of Mr. Prospector (by Raise a Native), UNBRIDLED’S SONG has enjoyed success when bred back over mares from a wide variety of branches of the Raise a Native line. These include grade one winners Songandaprayer (out of a mare by Premiership, a son of Exclusive Native) and Marylebone (out of a mare by Wavering Monarch, from the Majestic Prince line), and a stakes winner out of a mare by Alydar, a horse who is combining very well with Unbridled. He is also the sire of three stakes winners out of mares from his own Mr. Prospector line, with graded winners out of mares by Gone West and Norquestor (by Conquistador Cielo) and a stakes winner out of a mare by Miswaki.
The cross of Unbridled and UNBRIDLED’S SONG over Seattle Slew line mares has not been a prolific one. However, UNBRIDLED’S SONG is the sire of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile victor Midshipman out of a mare by Avenue of Flags, and grade one-winning sprinter First Defence out of a mare by Seattle Slew himself. We should note that the dams of both these horses were talented runners in their own right.
We can also note that UNBRIDLED’S SONG has two stakes winners, including the highly talented Rockport Harbor, out of mares by Copelan; has sired two stakes winners and a stakes-placed horse from the starters by Olympio; and from mares descending from Turn-to, has stakes winners out of daughters of Bates Motel, Lord Avie, and Drone, as well as Halo, Red Ransom (by Roberto) and Rollin On Over, who all stem from the Hail to Reason branch of that line. The Prince John strain is now rarely found in the sire line of mares (the most like source being Meadowlake), but would be a valuable asset if found elsewhere in a compatible pedigree.
