"This is a serious horse...he has such an efficiency of action... On top of his great pedigree, Oxbow has the most important trait a stallion needs, and that’s his natural speed and ability to carry it "
--D. Wayne Lukas
“Oxbow is a special horse. He has the speed of a sprinter, stamina of a classic winner, and the heart of a champion.”--Gary Stevens
"Oxbow is a throwback to another era, when horses made of sinews of steel, raced hard and often, regardless of the track, surface, and distance."--Steve Haskin
Oxbow is a superior runner with an explosive pedigree. Dominating gate-to-wire winner of the 2013 Preakness S. (gr. 1) and runner-up in the Belmont (gr. 1), he is the only Classic winner by Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. 1) winner and outstanding sire Awesome Again. His dam, meanwhile, is a full sister to Horse of the Year and Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. 1) hero Tiznow, also an outstanding sire. Furthermore, Oxbow is a "full brother in blood" (by the same sire and out of full sisters) to spectacular Grade 1 winner Paynter, and is bred on very similar lines to Horse of the Year and Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. 1) winner Ghostzapper, himself a prolific sire of stakes winners.
Ghostzapper has done very well when crossed over mares from the Mr. Prospector line. He has grade 1 winners Better Lucky and Zapper Pirate out of mares by Seeking the Gold (sire of Mutakddim, Petionville and Cape Town), and grade 1 winner Starship Truffles out of a mare by Not For Love (three-quarter brother to Woodman). From the Forty Niner branch of Mr. Prospector, Ghostzapper has graded stakes winners from daughters of Twining and Coronado’s Quest, while Awesome Again has grade 1 winner Nominee out of a mare by Forty Niner's son, Distorted Humor. This strongly suggests trying Oxbow with these and other sources of Forty Niner, such as Trippi, Gold Fever, Roar, Tactical Advantage, Gold Case and Luhuk. Ghostzapper has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Gone West, a line that has also done well under Tiznow, and which can be brought in through Speightstown, Elusive Quality, Grand Slam, Mr. Greeley, Proud Citizen and West By West.
From the Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector there is a graded winner by Ghostzapper out of a mare by Unbridled, and a multi-millionaire by Awesome Again out of a mare by Pentelicus (three-quarter brother to Unbridled). This suggests trying mares by Cahill Road (brother to Unbridled), and Unbridled’s Song and sons, such as Songandaprayer and Even the Score; Empire Maker; Broken Vow; Grindstone and his son Birdstone; and also introducing Fappiano through other sources such as Rubiano (bringing in a sister to Relaunch, who is in the broodmare sire line of Oxbow), Quiet American and his son Real Quiet; and Cryptoclearance, his son Victory Gallop, and his grandson, Candy Ride. Other branches of Mr. Prospector to produce stakes winners for Awesome Again, Ghostzapper and other sons, are: Conquistador Cielo (who could be good through Marquetry and Artax); Carson City (whose son, City Zip, is out of the mare who produced Ghostzapper, and who is also sire of Cuvee, Flying Chevron, Five Star Day, Lord Carson and Good and Tough); Smoke Glacken (by Two Punch); Jade Hunter; Gulch (sire of Thunder Gulch); and Miswaki (sire of Black Tie Affair and grandsire of Formal Gold).
Mr. Prospector is a son of Raise a Native, and Awesome Again and Ghostzapper have stakes winners out of mares descending from Raise a Native through Alydar (including through Saratoga Six and Turkoman) and Maria’s Mon, from the Wavering Monarch/Majestic Light branch.
Oxbow carries Seattle Slew in the distaff side of his pedigree, and Awesome Again and his sons have done well when crossed back over that strain. Tiznow, full brother to Oxbow's dam, has also enjoyed success with Seattle Slew inbreeding, so this strain looks well worth introducing. The cross with Seattle Slew through A.P. Indy and sons has produced four stakes winners for Awesome Again and his sons, two by Ghostzapper. A.P. Indy might be introduced through Malibu Moon (broodmare sire of an Awesome Again line stakes winner), Pulpit (sire of Tapit – who gives inbreeding to Relaunch and a sister – and of Sky Mesa), Mineshaft, Bernardini, Congrats, Flatter, Aptitude, Golden Missile, Friends Lake, Jump Start and Old Trieste. There are also four stakes winners by Awesome Again and sons out of mares by Capote and his son Boston Harbor, which also suggests mares by Matty G. Other Seattle Slew sources include Avenue of Flags (broodmare sire of a graded stakes winner by Ghostzapper), Digression (broodmare sire of a Grade 2 winner by Awesome Again), Slew o’ Gold, Septieme Ciel, Doneraile Court, Fast Play, Gold Legend, Slewpy, Metfield and Houston. There is also a grade 1 winner by Awesome Again out of a mare from the same Boldnesian line as Seattle Slew, out of daughter of Bold Revenue (by Bold Ruckus, sire of Beau Genius and Bold Executive).
Out of mares from the Roberto line, Ghostzapper has sired grade 1 winner Contested (from a daughter of Arch, by Kris S., also sire of Prized, Kissin Kris and Rock Hard Ten); and grade 1 winner Stately Victor (out of a mare by Dynaformer). There are also stakes winners from this line out of mares by Silver Hawk and Red Ransom. Roberto is a Hail to Reason line stallion, and from the Halo branch of this line, Awesome Again has the outstanding performer Game On Dude, out of a mare by Devil His Due (by Devil’s Bag, sire of Abaginone, Twilight Agenda, and Diablo), and a graded winner out of a mare by Saint Ballado (brother to Devil’s Bag, and sire of Sweetsouthernsaint, Straight Man, Yankee Victor and Captain Bodgit). Halo might also be tried through Southern Halo and More Than Ready. Awesome Again and his sons have enjoyed considerable success when bred back over a variety of branches of their own Northern Dancer line. This includes Storm Bird, including the Storm Cat sons Tale of the Cat and Storm Boot (inviting other Storm Cat line stallions such as Giant’s Causeway, Hennessy and his son Johannesburgh, Forest Wildcat, Forestry, Stormin Fever and Stormy Atlantic). Out of mares from the Danzig branch, there are Awesome Again line stakes winners out of mares by Dayjur, Langfuhr and Polish Numbers, along with Boundary, Chief’s Crown, Belong to Me, War Chant, War Front, Exchange Rate, Honor Grades, Lost Soldier, Danzig Connection and Katowice. Other branches of Northern Dancer to produce the dams of Awesome Again line stakes winners are Dixieland Band (sire of Dixie Union) and Theatrical (by Nureyev).
From the Caro line, Awesome Again has two stakes winners out of mares by Cozzene, including grade 1 winner Toccet. Ghostzapper has a graded scorer out of a mare by With Approval, and there is also a graded stakes winner by a son of Awesome Again out of a mare by Indian Charlie (by In Excess). There are also stakes winners out of mares from the Damascus line out of daughters of Time For a Change (sire of Fly So Free), Skip Trial (sire of Skip Away) and Valley Crossing and Unaccounted For (both by Private Account, sire of Private Terms, Personal Flag, Corporate Report and Secret Hello; grandsire of Afternoon Deelites). Ghostzapper also sired G2 winner and Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint (gr. 1) runner-up Judy the Beauty out of a mare by Holy Bull (whose son, Macho Uno, would give inbreeding to Primal Force, the dam of Awesome Again and Macho Uno), and a stakes winner from a daughter of Broad Brush (sire of Include).
