Conformation & Mating Recommendations
for OLD FASHIONED
Tabbed by DRF columnist Frank Mitchell as the most beautiful horse among the entering stallions of 2010, Old Fashioned was an $800,000 yearling and is out of the exceptionally good-looking Meadowlake mare Collect Call. Extremely well balanced, the son of Unbridled’s Song has the ideal length of body and stands 16.1 hands tall. He has a gorgeous head and intelligent eye, a nice long neck that ties in high and clean to a strong, deep shoulder. His hip and hind quarter are both long and powerful. Old Fashioned has good bone, short cannons and average size feet.
Old Fashioned’s great balance and quality will improve just about all types of mares. Areas in his pedigree suggest that breeders should consider mares that are of good substance, correct, have strong hips, and above average feet.
Jack Werk Mating Recommendations for Old Fashioned
When evaluating a stallion prospect – in this particular case, Old Fashioned -- there are, in my opinion, four overall factors to consider: race record, sire, female family, and the physical specimen.
“He is arguably the most beautiful horse among the entering stallions of 2010. Old Fashioned is not huge, unlike so many of his sire’s offspring, but he is splendidly shaped, with balance and quality nicely joined to muscle and scope.” Frank Mitchell, Daily Racing Form
I first consider race record. It is rare to find a successful stallion who did not earn black type, and you can practically count the modern examples on one hand, such as Danzig, Malibu Moon, and Fairy King, to name three off the top of my head. Old Fashioned, however, was a top-class racehorse and fulfills the first requirement in spades. Next in the equation is the matter of his sire, who happens to be Unbridled’s Song – one of the best in North America, period. Old Fashioned descends from a strong female family, too, so that box also is checked. And finally, he’s a grand physical, very much in the mold of his own sire, and he showed his physical presence early too, as a yearling, when he made $800,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. So, for Old Fashioned, all the boxes are checked.
Let’s look at him closely and delve a little deeper. He has the type of race record I like to see in a stallion prospect because he had 2-year-old form at the highest levels and was considered a live Kentucky Derby prospect in the winter before he turned 3. All in all, he was undefeated in three starts at 2, including a convincing 7 ¼ length-win in the G2 Remsen Stakes at 9 furlongs. At 3, he raced three times, all in stakes company, before injury derailed him before the Kentucky Derby. Throughout the spring, even with two consecutive losses leading up to the Derby, he was still highly considered for the classic. He won the G3 Southwest Stakes at a mile by 3 ¼ lengths, and he was 2nd in the G2 Arkansas Derby ahead of subsequent classic winner Summer Bird, and he also was 2nd in the G2 Rebel Stakes. He retired with 4 wins in 6 starts and nearly $600,000 in earnings. He left behind the very distinct feeling that we never really saw the best of him, and it was fairly obvious that his trainer, Larry Jones, who’d trained so many classics hopefuls and contenders in recent years, including Eight Belles and Hard Spun, had the highest regard for him.
When a stallion prospect has the race record, it’s usually pedigree that separates the good ones from the superior ones. Old Fashioned descends from the potent Fappiano branch of the Mr. Prospector sire line through Unbridled’s best racing and siring son, Unbridled’s Song. Although Unbridled’s Song is still in his infancy as a sire of sires, he’s already shown some potential with Songandaprayer, who’s sired 12 unrestricted SWs from his first four crops to race while standing initially for $10,000. Perhaps even more telling is his son Even the Score, who’s gotten 4 unrestricted SWs from his first crop including G1 winner Take the Points, while standing for $5,000. Old Fashioned’s dam is G3 winner Collect Call by Meadowlake. This is a strong black-type female family that includes the excellent sire French Deputy. What is particularly intriguing about Old Fashioned’s pedigree is the fact that his pedigree is totally void of Northern Dancer and has only one strain of Mr. Prospector through Fappiano (who’s proven to be the most successful strain for inbreeding to Mr. P!). This makes Old Fashioned an ideal stallion for much of the American broodmare population that already carries multiple strains of Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector, and he’s an obvious candidate to nick with Storm Cat-line mares, which have done well with this line.
Considering all of these factors, I believe Old Fashioned has a chance to become an important sire in the years to come, especially as he is the most reminiscent of his sire among the Unbridled’s Song stallions at stud. His racing career was similar to his sire – both were graded SWs at 2 over a route of ground (Old Fashioned won the Remsen at 1 1/8 miles and Unbridled’s Song won the BC Juvenile at 1 1/16 miles), both won or placed in Derby preps (Old Fashioned in the Arkansas Derby, Rebel Stakes and Southwest Stakes and Unbridled’s Song in the Florida Derby, Wood Memorial and Fountain of Youth Stakes), both were high-priced auction horses, both were grand individuals as racehorses, both had the families behind them, and both suit a wide variety of mares, physically and by pedigree.
In fact, I expect Old Fashioned to cross well with the same types of mares as his sire. That’s very good news as some of the better crosses include mares by the aforementioned Storm Cat line, as well as by mares by Forty Niner, Mt. Livermore, Deputy Minister, Relaunch, Caro, Gone West, Danzig, and their sons.
