Mating Recommendations:

Officer can be considered an ‘outcross stallion’ by current standards as he shows a pedigree free of Mr. Prospector and carries Northern Dancer in his sixth generation. It is therefore not surprising that the majority of his early stakes runners are out of mares from one of those two dominant sire-lines.

Five of Officers early stakes horses are out of Northern Dancer-line mares with the Danzig branch playing a prominent role. In fact, four of Officer’s stakes winners are out of Danzig line mares: the multiple stakes winner Chief Officer, (o/o a mare by Pine Bluff), the blacktype winners Offier Cherrie (o/o a mare by Sheikh Albadou), Satulagi (o/o a mare by Danzig Connection) and Frisk Her (o/o a mare by Honor Grades). Other sources of Danzig include Belong to Me, Chief’s Crown, War Chant, Langfuhr, Boundary, Dayjur, Green Desert, Danehill and his sons.

Both Chief Officer and Satulagi are free of inbreeding through four generations. The same can also be said of the blacktype runner Regal Officer, who is out of a mare by the Northern Dancer grandson Regal Classic (by Vice Regent). Officer’s sire Bertrando has also had success with the Northern Dancer line, particularly through Lyphard (two stakes winners) and Storm Cat (G1 winner Unfurl the Flag).

Officer has sired many of his other top winners out of Mr. Prospector-line mares. Graded winner Officer Rocket and graded stakes-placed Les Grands Trois are both out of mares by Gone West. Officer has also sired a pair of winners out of Fappiano granddaughters, including the stakes winner Sir Officer.

It’s likely no coincidence that Officer is working with these influences. In general, the Gone West and Fappiano branches of the Mr. Prospector-line have blended extremely well with In Reality. Runners like Classic winners Smarty Jones and Commendable, and the Classic-placed Closing Argument, are among the many top horses bred on some variation of the In Reality-Gone West combination In Reality with Fappiano has also proven wildly successful during the past decade. The likes of Champion Rubiano, Breeders’ Cup winner Unbridled Elaine and the Classic winners Unbridled, Real Quiet, and Empire Maker all show a variation on the Fappiano-In Reality cross.

These factors make mares by the many successful Gone West sons appealing for Officer-Mr. Greeley (and his son El Corredor), West by West, Grand Slam and Elusive Quality

Several Fappiano sons, namely Unbridled, Rubiano, Cryptoclearance and Quiet American, are establishing themselves as top broodmare sires and are their daughters and granddaughters are also compelling mates. Mare by younger Fappiano line stallions like Victory Gallop, Unbridled’s Song, Broken Vow and Songandaprayer should also be considered.
