Conformation & Mating Recommendations
for OFFICER
A stallion of considerable size, strength and power, Officer is the type of stallion that suits
a wide variety of physical types. Standing 16.1, Officer has a good head and a good length
of neck, that ties in well to a deep shoulder. Officer has a beautiful hindquarter that includes a great length to his hip and a good strong hind leg.
Officer’s overall balance is good, and, for a horse of his size and musculature, he has considerable length, a quality he imparts to his foals. Officer has very short cannon bones and is a very good horse at the walk, using himself particularly well. He has a good foot, excellent bone and is correct through his knees.
Officer is best suited to mares with a lot of leg. He can also help a mare that requires a little substance. Officer will ‘pretty up’ a plain mare and generally adds a lot of quality to the foal. One out of every eight mares bred to Officer in his first crop produced a stakes winner by him…what a way to ‘make’ a young mare.
Effectively an outcross for both Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector, OFFICER has quickly demonstrated that he is anexcellent cross for mares from both of those predominant sire lines.
He has already shown a remarkable affinity for mares from the Danzig line. This cross has already credited him with graded stakes-winning two-year-old Officer Cherrie (dam by Sheikh Albadou, a son of Green Desert); stakes winner Chief Officer (dam of Pine Bluff); stakes winner Frisk Her (dam of Honor Grades); and stakes winner Satulagi (dam by Danzig Connection). His multiple stakes winner Apollo Dolce is out of a mare descending from Northern Dancer through Summer Squall. This suggests mares by Storm Cat-who is bred on the same cross as Summer Squall-and his sons. OFFICER’S multiple stakes winner, Officer in Pursuit, is out of a mare by Opening Verse (by The Minstrel), and other branches of Northern Dancer that are strongly recommended here are Deputy Minister, Dixieland Band, and Lyphard.
Out of mares from the Mr. Prospector line, OFFICER is the sire of graded stakes winner Officer Rocket and graded stakes performer Les Grands Trois out of mares by Gone West, as well as a grade two-placed horse out of a mare by Mr. Greeley, a son of Gone West. OFFICER’S stakes winner U.S. Cavalry is out of a mare by Distorted Humor (who is out of a Danzig mare, as is fellow Mr. Prospector line horse, Fusaichi Pegasus), and his stakes-winning and graded stakes-placed Officer Ipod is out of a mare by Mr. Prospector’s son Boca Rio. Since he is an In Reality line horse, OFFICER might be expected to do well with the Fappiano branch of the Mr. Prospector line, and he already has a stakes winner out of a mare by Sefapiano, a son Fappiano. OFFICER should also enjoy crossing with mares descending from Fappiano through Rubiano (bringing in a sister to Relaunch, who is in OFFICER’S male line), Unbridled, Unbridled’s Song, and Empire Maker.
OFFICER’S sire line has done well with Turn-to line mares, and OFFICER is no exception. His grade two winner Elite Squadron, is out of a mare by High Brite. He is a son of Best Turn, also sire of Cox’s Ridge (who could be utilized through Sultry Song, Out of Place and Vanlandingham). OFFICER’S sire, Bertrando has a grade one winner out of a mare by Devil’s Bag (by Halo, by Hail to Reason, a son of Turn-to) and OFFICER has sired a stakes winner out of a mare by Twilight Agenda, a son of Devil’s Bag. This suggests trying mares by other Halo line stallions, such as Saint Ballado (a brother to Devil’s Bag) and More Than Ready. From the Roberto branch of the Hail to Reason line, OFFICER has sired graded stakes-placed two-year-old Run Alex Run out of a mare by Dynaformer. The Roberto strain in general should do well here.
OFFICER has a stakes winner out of a mare by Mt. Livermore, a stallion who has combined well with In Reality. It should also pay to try sons of Mt. Livermore, such as Housebuster, Orientate, and Peaks and Valleys, Great Above, the broodmare sire of Housebuster, should also be good here, as should his son, Holy Bull.
OFFICER is from the Relaunch male line out of a Seattle Slew line mare. The similarly-bred Tiznow already has two stakes winners out of Seattle Slew line mares, and OFFICER has a stakes-placed performer out of a mare by A.P. Indy, which suggests trying OFFICER with mares by other sons and grandsons of Seattle Slew. It could be particularly interesting to try mares by Malibu Moon (who is bred on similar lines to OFFICER’S broodmare sire, Septieme Ciel. Seattle Slew is a Bold Ruler-line horse, descending via Boldnesian, which also suggests trying Bold Ruckus line mares. OFFICER has also sired a stakes winner from this line out of a mare by Cannonade (by Bold Bidder) and his sire has a stakes winner from the Raja Baba branch (suggesting that horse’s grandson, Notebook). Another Bold Ruler-line horse that would be interesting here is Glitterman, who introduces a sister to Relaunch. Never Bend, by Nasrullah, the sire of Bold Ruler, is another stain that would be effective here.
OFFICER’S fourth dam, Splendid Spree, is out of a half-sister to Buckpasser. Bringing in more Buckpasser strain should work well, and a particularly good candidate is Private Account, who is closely related to Splendid Spree.
