NORTHERN AFLEET modified: 1/20/2012
Conformation & Mating Recommendations for NORTHERN AFLEET
Northern Afleet has a compact body type, typical of his sire line, and he has done best with mares with more size and scope than himself. Standing at just over 15.3 hands, Northern Afleet is a powerful-looking and heavily-muscled horse with a very strong gaskin. He has a nice head, and is maybe a fraction short in the neck, but has a deep shoulder and good girth. He has excellent balance and a great hip length. He has good feet and excellent bone and is correct through his knees. He has good short cannon bones, but his pasterns are slightly long and soft.

Northern Afleet would be best suited to mares with size that require substance. He also does best with mares that are maybe a fraction upright and/or have short pasterns.

NORTHERN AFLEET has quickly demonstrated a powerful affinity for mares from the Hail to Reason line. Out of a mare by Hawkster (by Silver Hawk, a son of Roberto), he has sired dual classic-winning Champion Afleet Alex, and stakes-winning and graded-placed Unforgettable Max. His graded stakes winner Saint Afleet is out of a mare by Saint Ballado (by Halo), and NORTHERN AFLEET also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Devil’s Bag, a brother to Saint Ballado. Roberto line options include Lear Fan (giving line-breeding to the family of NORTHERN AFLEET’S maternal grandsire, Nureyev), Red Ransom, Dynaformer and Kris S., as well as his sons. Halo could also be brought in through Southern Halo (sire of More Than Ready). Another branch of the Hail to Reason sire line worthy of consideration is that of Stop the Music, particularly through Cure the Blues.

By a son of Mr. Prospector out of a mare by Nureyev, NORTHERN AFLEET is bred on the same cross as outstanding international sire Kingmambo. Like that horse, he has enjoyed success with the Seattle Slew line having sired a stakes winner out of a mare by Seattle Slew. This suggests mares by virtually any Seattle Slew line horse could be worth considering, candidates include A.P. Indy (and sons such as Pulpit, Malibu Moon, and Golden Missile), Slew o’Gold, Avenue of Flags, Capote (and his son Boston Harbor), Fast Play, General Meeting, Metfield, Seattle Song, Septieme Ciel, Slew City Slew, Slewpy, Tsunami Slew and Williamstown. From the Bold Ruler line, NORTHERN AFLEET is also the sire of a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Spectacular Bid, as well as stakes winners out of mares descending from Bold Ruler through Glitterman and Air Forbes Won (by Bold Forbes).

NORTHERN AFLEET’S dam is inbred to Nearctic (the sire of Northern Dancer), and goes back in tail-female line to a three-parts-sister to that horse. Not surprisingly then, he has done well when bred back over Northern Dancer line mares. He has a stakes winner out of a mare by King’s Theatre -by Sadler’s Wells, a three-parts-brother to Nureyev -a cross that could also be tried here with mares by El Prado. Other Northern Dancer line stallions who are broodmare sires of NORTHERN AFLEET stakes winners are Citidancer (by Dixieland Band) and Personal Hope (by Storm Bird). Personal Hope is by the same sire, and from the same female line as *Storm Cat, and that stallion would be particularly interesting to introduce through son such as Tale of the Cat, Storm Boot, Forest Wildcat, and Stormy Atlantic. Other strains of Northern Dancer to enjoy particular success with NORTHERN AFLEET’S sire, Afleet, include Nijinsky II, Vice Regent (sire of Deputy Minister) and Lyphard.

NORTHERN AFLEET has sired stakes winners out of mares by Valid Appeal (by In Reality) and his son Mister Jolie, suggesting mares by Valid Wager, Valid Expectation and Successful Appeal. He should also be interesting with *In Reality via Relaunch (through Honour and Glory, Cee’s Tizzy, Tiznow, and Officer), and Known Fact.

NORTHERN AFLEET is a half-brother to the grade one-winning Tap to Music, a daughter of Pleasant Tap (by Pleasant Colony). This suggests trying mares by Pleasant Tap, and other sons of his sire, Pleasant Colony. Pleasant Colony is by His Majesty, a son of Ribot. There is also a stakes winner by a grandson of Graustark (brother to His Majesty) out of the dam of NORTHERN AFLEET, and NORTHERN AFLEET has a stakes winnerout of a mare by a son of Graustark. Lost Code is another Ribot line stallion worth considering. Ack Ack, the broodmare sire of Lost Code, is also responsible for Broad Brush, broodmare sire of a NORTHERN AFLEET stakes winner.
