Conformation Information for MASTER COMMAND
Master Command was a striking son of A.P. Indy with all the correct angles. He was an extremely well-balanced horse with a beautiful top/bottom line ratio. A gorgeous head and a very clean neck rested on top of an excellent, laid-down shoulder. The slope of his front end reflected perfectly on Master Command’s impressive hip and hock angles.

A $650,000 Saratoga yearling, this flashy horse carried on the class and appearance of A.P. Indy, but maintained the substance and bone of his broodmare sire, Lord At War. Compatible with a vast majority of mares, Master Command helped bring up the level of his mares by exuding the class, elegance, and conformational correctness he exhibits.

By A.P. Indy from a powerful branch of the La Troienne family, Master Command is closely inbred to the outstanding broodmare sire of sires, Secretariat.

MASTER COMMAND is completely free of the influence of Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector, and looked sure to cross well with mares from those lines. There are nearly 70 stakes winners bred on an A.P. Indy/Northern Dancer cross, and most lines Northern Dancer appear possible here. The Danzig branch has particular appeal with the distaff side of the MASTER COMMAND’S family and notable sources of Danzig to use here include Belong to Me (giving inbreeding to MASTER COMMAND’S family), Lost Soldier (a half-brother to Lord At War’s dam), Polish Numbers (out of a mare inbred to the La Troienne family), Danzig Connection (bringing in Secretariat’s half-brother, Sir Gaylord), Deerhound (a half-brother to the dam of A.P. Indy), Chief’s Crown (giving a third cross to Secretariat), Honor Grades (a half-brother to A.P. Indy, and giving an inbreeding that has already produced an Eclipse Award winner), Pine Bluff, Langfuhr, Boundary, and Exchange Rate. Other branches of Northern Dancer that appear in the broodmare sire line of stakes winners by A.P. Indy and his sons include Deputy Minister (who particularly appeals through Silver Deputy and Touch Gold), Nijinsky II, Lyphard, Dixieland Band, Nureyev, El Gran Senor (who looks particularly promising here, as his dam is inbred to La Troienne), and Storm Bird, and his sons Storm Cat and Summer Squall (a half-brother to A.P. Indy and already a broodmares sire of an Eclipse Award winner by a son of A.P. Indy). There is also a grade one winner by A.P. Indy out of a mare by Sadler’s Wells (sire of El Prado in the U.S.). In addition, A.P. Indy has also sired a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Clever Trick, who is by Northern Dancer’s fellow Nearctic son, Icecapade. MASTER COMMAND may have also been well-suited by receiving Icecapade through Wild Again.

There are already more than 50 stakes winners by A.P. Indy and his sons out of Mr. Prospector-line mares. The successful sources of Mr. Prospector here include Fappiano (including through his sons Unbridled, Quiet American, and Rubiano), Seeking the Gold and Woodman (who both reinforce the La Troienne in this pedigree, and suggest the similarly-bred Miswaki and Mining), Forty Niner, Machiavellian, Afleet, Silver Ghost, Two Punch, and Distinctive Pro. From another branch of the Raise a Native-line, there are five A.P. Indy-line stakes winners out of mares by Alydar, including a grade one winner out of a mare by Easy Goer (dam inbred to La Troienne).

MASTER COMMAND’S pedigree contains a cross of the mighty Ribot, and doubling up on this strain may have worked well. From this line, A.P. Indy has sired graded stakes winners out of mares by Pleasant Colony is by His Majesty, so this also suggests introducing that horse’s brother Graustark). A.P. Indy has also sired a grade one winner out of a mare by Ribot’s grandson, Hoist the Flag (by Tom Rolfe).

A.P. Indy-line stallions are starting to work well with certain branches of the Turn-to/Hail to Reason line. A.P. Indy has a grade one winner out of a mare, by Cox’s Ridge, and a grade one winner from the Hail to Reason branch of the Turn-to line (out of a mare by Cure the Blues, a son of Stop the Music). A.P. Indy-line stallions are also enjoying success when Hail to Reason is introduced through Roberto.

There also appears to be an emerging affinity between A.P. Indy and mares from the Relaunch branch of the In Reality line. Mares by Tiznow and Officer-both from this line-would double Seattle Slew.

As mentioned, MASTER COMMAND is from the La Troienne family, and linebred to that great mare. Further infusions of that strain should pay dividends. Among potential broodmare sires from MASTER COMMAND’S branch of the La Troienne family-that of Searching-are Premiership, Caerleon, Belong to Me, Strolling Along, Easy Goer, Hero’s Honor, Eastern Echo, Roar, Magesterial, Lasting Approval, and Petionville. Stallions out of mares inbred to La Troienne include Private Account, Polish Numbers, El Gran Senor, Try My Best, and Woodman. Bringing in the La Troienne strain through Buckpasser is also promising, and in addition to the horses just mentioned, we could consider Seeking the Gold, Miswaki, Mining, With Approval, Touch Gold and Not For Love, as well as mares from the Buckpasser male line (potential sires include Silver Charm, Montbrook and Lite the Fuse). Mares from La Troienne’s own female line would also be potential candidates.
