"The closest thing I've seen to Unbridled's Song. His combination of looks, class, and sheer brilliance reminds me of his sire - both on and off the racetrack."

"My family has been training horses over this track for nearly 20 years and have developed a lot of nice horses. Every once in awhile a horse will truly stand out and this DLL colt (Hip #647) is training like one of those rare standouts. He’s as fast as any horse we’ve ever had here and just does everything the right way."

Mating Recommendations for GRAYDAR

By: Alan Porter

Undefeated in graded stakes competition, Graydar’s victories include the New Orleans Handicap (gr. II), and wire-to-wire triumphs in the Kelso Handicap (gr. II) and Donn Handicap (gr. I). Graydar is one of the most accomplished sons of Unbridled’s Song, an outstanding sire who already has six grade one siring stallion sons to represent him.

One of the most prolific stakes winner producing crosses for Unbridled’s Song and his sons has been with mares from the Storm Cat line. Graydar should be particularly suited by mares from that line as he is out of a mare by Champion Two-Year-Old Dehere, like Storm Cat, a product of the Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross. Among the broodmare sires of stakes winners on the Unbridled’s Song/Storm Cat cross  Tale of the Cat (sire of Lion Heart), Storm Boot, Storm Creek, Sea of Secrets, Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir), Forestry, Tabasco Cat, Giant’s Causeway (sire of First Samurai), Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg, Cactus Ridge and Wiseman’s Ferry, grandsire of Scat Daddy), Catienus and Menifee (by Harlan, also the sire of Harlan’s Holiday), while other possibilities include Stormy Atlantic, Bernstein, Stormin Fever, Freud, Bluegrass Cat, Yankee Gentleman and Pure Prize. Unbridled’s Song also has a grade one winner out of a mare by Summer Squall (a Storm Bird son bred on the same cross as Storm Cat), and a grade one winner out of a mare by Storm Bird son, Ocean Storm.

Graydar’s broodmare sire, Dehere, is by Deputy Minister, and that horse’s sire, Vice Regent is a close relative to The Minstrel, and he can be found through daughters of L'Emigrant, Opening Verse and Palace Music. The strain of Nijinsky II – a three-quarters brother to The Minstrel – should also work well here and might be introduced through Royal Academy, Shadeed, Alydeed, Seattle Dancer, Sky Classic, Strawberry Road and Sword Dance, who is another bred on the Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross).

Out of mares from the Danzig line there are Unbridled’s Song line stakes winners from mares by Belong to Me, Boundary, Corridor Key, Danehill, Langfuhr, Pine Bluff and Polish Numbers. It could also be worth introducing this strain through Chief's Crown (another Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross), Anabaa, Dayjur, Honor Grades, War ChantWar Front (giving an interesting inbreeding to Fappiano), Exchange Rate, Hard Spun, Lost Soldier (a Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross) and  Danzig Connection.

Other Northern Dancer sources to consider include Dixieland Band (sire of Dixie Union, Dixie Brass and Citidancer, who is already broodmare sire of a grade one winner by Midnight Lute, a horse bred on a similar cross to Graydar), Sadler's Wells (sire of El Prado – himself sire broodmare sire of an Unbridled’s Song line stakes winner - and grandsire of Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller). We can note that Midnight Lute – like Graydar, a Fappiano line stallion out of a Dehere mare – has already sired four stakes winners, one grade one, with inbreeding to Deputy Minister, and this opens the way for considering mares by Awesome Again (and his son, Ghostzapper), Touch Gold, French Deputy and Service Stripe – all broodmare sires of Unbridled’s Song line stakes winners. Deputy Minister could also be brought in through Silver Deputy, Forest Camp and Deputy Commander. From the Icecapade branch of the Nearctic (sire of Northern Dancer) line, Unbridled's Song is sire of the brilliant Zensational out of a mare by Phone Trick (by Clever Trick), a horse who is also broodmare sire of a grade one winner by Unbridled’s Song’s sire, Unbridled.

As a grandson of Fappiano, the success of Unbridled's Song and his sons with mares carrying In Reality (giving a double of the influential sire, Rough' n Tumble) was no surprise. From this line, Unbridled's Song has grade one winners out of mares by Valid Appeal and Taylor's Falls; a graded stakes winner out of a mare by In Reality himself; a graded stakes winner out a mare by Know Fact, and two stakes winners out of mares descending from In Reality through Relaunch, who can be found through Honour and Glory, Skywalker, Bertrando, Officer, Cee’s Tizzy and Tiznow (already broodmare sire of an Unbridled’s Song line graded stakes winner). There is also an Unbridled’s Song grade one winner out of a mare by In Reality son Kyle’s Our Man, and an Unbridled's Song's grade one winner out of a mare by Glitterman (out of a sister to Relaunch).

Unbridled enjoyed a strong affinity with mares by Caro, Unbridled's Song being an example. In turn, Unbridled's Song has a grade one winner out of a mare by Dr. Carter (a son of Caro) and there are also Unbridled’s Song line stakes winners out of a mares by other Caro line stallions Siberian Express (sire of In Excess, and grandsire of Indian Charlie), and Alphabet Soup and his sire of Cozzene (also sire of Mizzen Mast).

The cross of Unbridled's Song with mares descending from Blushing Groom, has produced stakes winners out of mares by Mt. Livermore and his sons, Housebuster, Orientate and Peaks and Valleys; Rahy (broodmare sire of a graded stakes winner by Unbridled’s Song); and Runaway Groom (sire of Cherokee Run).

Unbridled's Song and his sons have also begun to find success when bred back over mares from their own Mr. Prospector sire line, among the successful representatives being Gone West (including through Mr. Greeley and his son, El Corredor, and West By West, suggesting trying mares by Grand Slam, Elusive Quality, Speightstown and Proud Citizen); with Forty Niner through Distorted Humor, Gold Case, Luhuk and Tactical Advantage; Norquestor and his sire Conquistador Cielo (also sire of Marquetry and grandsire of Artax); Smart Strike (broodmare sire of a grade one winner by a son of Unbridled's Song); Machiavellian (sire of Street Cry); Miswaki (sire of Black Tie Affair and grandsire of Formal Gold); Lemon Drop Kid; Two Punch (sire of Smoke Glacken); and Mutakddim (by Seeking the Gold also sire of Petionville and Cape Town).

The cross of Unbridled’s Song and mares from the Seattle Slew line is beginning to emerge, and has produced nine stakes winners, including Champion Midshipman (out of a mare by Avenue of Flags), grade one winner First Defence (out of a mare by Seattle Slew himself), graded scorers out of mares by  Vindication, Pulpit (sire of Sky Mesa and Tapit) and Acceptable (by Capote, also sire of Boston Harbor, who is also sire of an Unbridled’s Song line stakes winner), as well as stakes winners out of mares by A.P. Indy, Fast Play and Chief Seattle. Mineshaft, Flatter, Congrats and Malibu Moon are all products of the same cross as Pulpit, and other A.P. Indy line candidates including Bernardini, Jump Start, Majestic Warrior and Stephen Got Even.
