Conformation & Mating Recommendations for FORESTRY
Alan Porter - As a yearling, Forestry was a $1.5 million Keeneland July Sale topper, which speaks volumes about his good looks.

Forestry is a stallion of great quality and substance. He has a beautiful head, neck and shoulder and a deep heart girth. He is a fraction taller and longer than a typical Storm Cat. Forestry is extremely well-rounded with great balance and a nice hip. His hocks set a hair away from him, and at times he can pass this on to his foals. However`, he is a very correct son of Storm Cat with decent bone and nice short cannons.

Overall, he has a great profile and has a lot of quality. Forestry will help to refine a plain mare and generally adds a lot of class to the foal. He does best when combined with a large, big-boned mare with substance and plenty of foot.

FORESTRY’S grade one-producing second dam is by Dr. Fager out of a three-parts-sister to the dam of Mr. Prospector, so it is not surprising that FORESTRY has demonstrated a strong affinity for Mr. Prospector through Fappiano (out of a Dr. Fager mare). He has graded stakes winner Etched out of a mare by Unbridled’s Song (by Unbridled); and 2 stakes winners, one graded, out of mares by Quiet American. Stakes winner Queens Plaza has a second dam by Fappiano. Other strains of Fappiano that should work well here include Rubiano and Broken Vow. FORESTRY also has stakes winners out of mares descending from Mr. Prospector through Jade Hunter, Seeking the Gold (sire of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies victress Cash Run out of the dam of FORESTRY), Kingmambo and Forty Niner. FORESTRY is also the sire of the very fast multiple graded winner Smokey Glacken out of a half-sister to Mr. Prospector’s grandson, Smoke Glacken, which makes him worth considering here.

FORESTRY has shown a great affinity for mares carrying Dr. Fager in general, including a stakes winner out of a mare by Dr. Blum. This also suggests that mares by Holy Bull, should do well. In Reality, who is out of a mare by Dr. Fager’s sire, Rough’n Tumble, appears in the pedigrees of three of FORESTRY’S stakes winners, including grade one winner Discreet Cat and graded winner Etched.

Mr. Prospector is a son of Raise a Native, and FORESTRY has also worked well with other branches of this sire line. He has a stakes winner out of a mare by Alydar, and two out of mares by his son Saratoga Six (including grade one winner Diplomat Lady), and he also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Affirmed (by Exclusive Native). In addition FORESTRY’S pedigree suggests that he should work well with Raise A Native via Majestic Light (including through Wavering Monarch and his son, Maria’s Mon).

In general, the Storm Cat line has been very effective when crossed over mares from the male line of Damascus. Out of mares from this sire line, FORESTRY has sired the sensational Discreet Cat (from a mare by Private Account) and stakes winner Dancin Olivia (out of a mare by Gilded Time who gives line-breeding to the Grey Flight family). Time for a Change is another Damascus line horse who carries Grey Flight, and he is broodmare sire of FORESTRY’S multiple graded stakes-placed performer Hasslefree.

FORESTRY has enjoyed being crossed back over mares from his own Northern Dancer male line. Out of a mare by Magesterial (a horse bred on a similar cross to Storm Cat, and giving line-breeding to Grey Flight), he is the sire of the brilliant Smokey Glacken. From a mare by Al Nasr (a son of Lyphard) he is the sire of the talented graded scorer Teton Forest. His four-time stakes winner Selvatica is out of a daughter of Strawberry Road (from the Nijinsky II line, but also giving line-breeding to Flower Bowl, the dam of His Majesty). Multiple stakes winner Deputy Storm is out of a mare by Silver Deputy (by Deputy Minister), and stakes winner Forest Danz is from a mare by Danzig. Icecapade is a son of Nearctic, and is three-quarters related to Northern Dancer. The mating between FORESTRY and a mare by Icecapade’s son, Ice Age, resulted in the record-breaking grade one winner Forest Danger. Icecapade could also be sourced through Clever Trick/Phone Trick and Wild Again.

FORESTRY is out of a mare by Pleasant Colony, from the His Majesty branch of the Ribot line. He has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Batonnier, another son of His Majesty. Graustark, a brother to His Majesty, appears in three of his stakes winners, and there are also stakes winners out of mares from this line sired by Linkage (by Hoist the Flag) and Lost Code.

From the Turn-to line, FORESTRY has sired stakes winners out of mares by Cox’s Ridge and Saint Ballado (by Halo), and he also has stakes winners out of mares by Irish River (graded stakes winner Old Forester) and Meadowlake (graded stakes winner Carolyn’s Cat). We would also suggest horses that introduce strains of the Grey Flight family could prove worthwhile, sources including-in addition to those mentioned above-What a Pleasure, Bold Lad, Silver Ghost.
