Last Leaf won her stakes debut in Saturday's $75,000 Hollywood Beach S. at Gulfstream Park, defeating Nerve and Barone Cesco in a thrilling three-horse photo finish.

The 2-year-old daughter of Not This Time was also making her debut on the turf, as well as facing males for the first time. Last Leaf was the first of two stakes winners on the day for her sire, who leads the Second-Crop sire list with 10 stakes winners and more than $3.6 million in progeny earnings.

Last Leaf, a 10 3/4-length allowance winner on Sept. 4 over Gulfstream's main track, chased Nerve through the first quarter-mile in :22.32. The two were on equal terms at the top of the stretch and battled to the wire, with Last Leaf winning by a head over Nerve and a fast-closing Barone Cesco.

“My legs are tired. I’ve been doing a rain dance for three days,” said winning trainer Ronald Spatz. “They tell me top and bottom is good for [turf].”

Last Leaf, owned by Monarch Stables, is now 3-1-0 in five starts and has earned $107,490. Bred in Kentucky by Khalid Mishref Alkahtani, she is the first foal out of stakes-placed My Miss Kallie.
