Kaigun, Northern Afleet’s leading earner of 2014, showed an amazing turn of foot in the stretch to win Friday’s $250,000 Seabiscuit H. (G2) over the Del Mar turf course.

Northern Afleet is the sire of some 33 stakes horses and 18 stakes winners across the globe in 2014. Kaigun, who took the Grade 2 Play the King S. at Woodbine in August, has banked a total of $862,094 this season.

Previously run at Hollywood Park as the Citation Handicap, the Seabiscuit was contested at 1 1/16 miles. Kaigun, under Corey Nakatani, was content to sit near the back of the eight horse field for the first six furlongs. Nakatani sent the 4-year-old widest of all coming into the final quarter mile to sweep by the entire field with about a furlong to go.

Kaigun held off Za Approval to win by three parts of a length while flying through the final sixteenth in :05.91 seconds, completing the course in 1:41.38.

“Mark (trainer Mark Casse) said this horse will place you right where you need to be,” said Nakatani. “If they go slow or they go fast, he’ll be in the right spot. I worked him the other morning on the grass (Nov. 23) and he went in :46 (:46.80). He loves it. I knew he had the class and then when we hit the turn I took him wide and he went. I didn’t want to get him stopped and he fired.”

Kaigun is owned by the trio of Gary Barber of Los Angeles, Quintessential Racing of Tina Casse of Ocala, FL and Horse’n Around Stable of Harvey Swartz of Ontario, Canada. With the victory, he upped his lifetime bankroll to $964,220.
