Graydar's world traveler 3-year-old Gray Magician will break from post 4 in Saturday's $3 million Kentucky Derby (G1) at Churchill Downs.

Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Gary Barber and Wachtel Stable, Gray Magician is Graydar's first Derby starter. He is coming off a three-quarter length defeat in the $2.5 million UAE Derby (G2) in the 1 3/16-mile contest.

Gray Magician's Derby destiny was assured following his work last Saturday morning. He arrived at Churchill Downs on Monday.

"He worked super and came home really well," trainer Peter Miller said. "I couldn't be happier with how he did it. He came home (his final quarter-mile) in :23 1/5, and that was very good. He galloped out another eighth (to six furlongs) in 1:12 2/5. This is a fast race track here, but it was the way he did it.”

Gray Magician has been training at his San Luis Rey base in southern California since returning from Dubai. Bred by Twin Creeks Farm, who campaigned Graydar, Gray Magician is a full brother to Lombo, winner of last year's Robert B. Lewis S. (G3).

“It shouldn’t be a problem. We plan on taking back early,” Miller offered after the draw. Gray Magician has set just off the pace in several of his starts, and with War of Will and Tax likely to go for the lead from posts 1 and 2, Gray Magician will likely follow those two to get position into the first turn.

Gray Magician will be ridden in the Derby by Drayden Van Dyke. Post time on Saturday is 6:50 p.m. ET.
